Boris unveils NEW measures to shield vulnerable with 12 week coronavirus lockdown | UK | News

Boris Johnson unveiled his plans to shield 1.5million vulnerable people who are most at risk of coronavirus. The Prime Minister warned the Government will continue to implement measures if people do not abide by social distancing advice. Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick added the vulnerable, who will be contacted by the NHS, will be asked to have no contact with the outside world for 12 weeks.

Speaking from Downing Street, Mr Johnson said: “We now need to take special steps to protect the vulnerable.

“Even if you think you are personally not vulnerable – there are plenty of people you can infect and lives are at risk.

“Take this advice seriously, follow it, it is absolutely crucial.

“As I have said, we will keep the implementation of these measures under constant review.

“Remember in following this advice. Remember each and every one of us, you, are doing your bit in following this advice.

“The more we slow the spread, the more time we give the NHS to prepare, the more lives we will save, and the faster we will get through this.”

Mr Jenrick added: “I don’t underestimate what we’re asking of people. It will be tough.

“But if you are one of these people I want to assure these people on behalf of the Government that you are not alone.”

Mr Johnson went on to warn the Government has already taken “very draconian steps” in closing schools, pubs and shops.

He said: “A huge quantity of our normal daily life has been totally transformed.

“It is very important for people’s mental and physical well-being and they should be able to get out and exercise if they possibly can.

“But when we do that we have to do it responsibly. We have all seen how people have been enjoying themselves over a beautiful weekend.

“If you don’t do it responsibly… there is going to be no doubt that we will have to bring forward further measures.”
