Beating a weakened Iceland side will not confirm England as world beaters but it will reassure everyone they are no longer vulnerable to the self-immolation associated with the dog days of the Roy Hodgson era.

“The biggest thing from the Iceland was patience once you go behind in a game,” said Southgate.

“The decision-making under pressure, the patience to wait for good opportunities is something that we have really added over the last few years.

“The players know that if we go behind we stay calm and we make the right decisions. We definitely used that experience as one of a few to learn from.”

After the stress and anxiety of that time, Southgate seems to have pulled off the trick of making playing for England enjoyable again.
