What is a face covering and why does it help curtail the spread of COVID-19?

Prime Minister Boris Johson has mounting evidence shows masks protect individuals and those around them.

A face covering is a scarf, piece of cloth or a mask placed over your nose, and mouth.

The Government has said face coverings are a precautionary wearer and not necessarily protective for the wearer, but may protect other people from an infected person.
