Manchester United have been linked with a move for Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel – and former Red Devils stopper Mark Bosnich believes it would be a “fantastic move both parties”.

Speaking about a potential move to Schmeichel, Bosnich told Sky Sports: “When he’s playing well, he’s as good as any goalkeeper in the Premier League. He’s won a title with Leicester, he’s been very consistent at international level for quite some time as well. Obviously, when Leicester were in the Champions League he performed very well.

“We don’t know exactly with the David De Gea situation, we saw Ole Gunnar Solskaer back him and keep him in the side. There’s Dean Henderson as well, but I think that would be a fantastic move for both parties.

“Even if they decide to keep David De Gea, to have someone of the quality of Kasper Schmeichel fighting for a place with De Gea would bring the whole standard up a coupe of notches.

“Like I said, when he plays at his best which is more regular than not, Kasper Schmeichel is as good as anyone in the Premier League.”

Henderson conceded only 33 goals in 36 league appearances, keeping 13 clean sheets in the process, as the Blades recorded a ninth-place finish on their return to the top flight.

The 23-year-old does not want to return to Old Trafford to play second fiddle, which further complicates the situation for United.

Bosnich believes Henderson will return to Bramall Lane if a deal for Schmeichel comes to fruition.

“If they go and get Kasper they’re not go and get Dean Henderson back,” the Aussie said. “Dean Henderson will stay at Sheffield United, there’s no doubt about that.

“Once again, we’re not privy to what’s going on behind closed doors unless they’ve already said to Dean Henderson, ‘Look, we’d like you to come back and fight with David De Gea for that first-team place’ and Dean Henderson is umming and ahing, they might be thinking, ‘OK, we would like another quality goalkeeper to come in’ and that comes to the Kasper Schmeichel thing.

“We’ll wait and see but I think the Kasper Schmeichel thing would be fantastic for both parties.”
