Maria Zakharova, of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said today: “We again draw your attention to the fact that the build-up of the American military presence in Poland does not solve the security problem. “On the contrary, it only exacerbates the already difficult situation along the western borders of Russia, contributing to the escalation of tensions and increasing the risk of unintended incidents.”

Zakharova added the Russian side perceives assurances from NATO about the insignificant and rotational nature of the reinforcements as “nothing else than attempts to distort reality”.

“The implementation of the US-Polish agreement will qualitatively strengthen the offensive potential of the US forces in Poland,” she said.

It comes after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak met on Saturday to sign a recently negotiated US-Poland Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement.

It sets out the legal framework for the additional presence of US troops in the country.

The country was Pompeo’s final stop on a four-nation tour of Central and Eastern Europe.

Polish Foreign Affairs Minister Jacek Czaputowicz described the deal as one of “historic importance” and that it “has crowned the efforts to guarantee the security and safe development” in Poland.

The US says the agreement “permit us to implement fully the enhanced defense cooperation envisioned by Presidents Trump and Duda”.

The Trump administration describes Warsaw as a “crucial strategic US ally in Central Europe”, citing the efforts of Polish troops who “stand shoulder-to-shoulder with US forces in Afghanistan and elsewhere, and provide critical support to the Defeat-ISIS Campaign”.

It offers the chance to “enhance and modernise” their military capabilities, they added.

The US and Poland agreed to an increase in US military presence in the country in 2018 after a “Fort Trump” was proposed during official discussions with President Andrzej Duda in Washington.

An estimated 4,500 to 5,000 US troops are already stationed in Poland, according to different sources.
