  • Mikel Arteta makes four changes as Granit Xhaka returns to starting XI

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 ARSENAL

14: Woodwork! Golden chance for Arsenal goes begging. Very unusual for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to miss from there. He’s played through by Kieran Tierney and thumps it against the underside of the crossbar and away.

Booked! Shkodran Mustafi booked for sliding in on Danny Ings. More clumsy than malicious.

11: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has the first opportunity for the visitors but it’s straight at the goalkeeper. Bukayo Saka then looks to steam through on goal but having squared it to Eddie Nketiah to convert – it’s disallowed for offside.

8: I’ve only just seen this but the Daily Mail claim Matteo Guendouzi said the following to the Brighton players during the 2-1 defeat at the Amex Stadium.

“He was saying the Brighton players were s*** and that he and his team-mates earn so much more than they ever will. He’s done it in other games as well,” a source told the newspaper.

5: Confidence in the Arsenal camp looks fragile. Hector Bellerin, who is desperate to plant 3000 trees, gifts the ball to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg while under no pressure whatsoever.

Incidentally, Mikel Arteta virtually conformed that Matteo Guendouzi misses the game for disciplinary issues.

3: I should mention that the clash between Burnley and Watford is also underway at Turf Moor. I’ll keep you updated with anything that happens there.

Arsenal rattled in the opening stages. The ball is worked to the middle by Ryan Bertrand and Danny Ings nearly profits but can’t quite adjust his feet to the deflection.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 ARSENAL

1: We’re underway in the blazing sunshine. 30 degrees out there.

One noteworthy incident was the Arsenal players being out on the pitch about five minutes before KO. The lads in the Sky Sports studio thought that was a sign that Mikel Arteta’s side mean business tonight. Could also be bad time keeping of course. We’ll see.

Those damn trees…

Ah listen… I liked Hector Bellerin’s promise to plant 3,000 trees every time Arsenal won. It was a noble gesture but unfortunately football isn’t that forgiving.

His reward for trying to create a healthier climate, with the aim of creating clean air and water as well as providing habitats for wildlife was a cheeky jab to the kidneys from bookmaker Paddy Power.

Having failed to win a game since the resumption – Paddy Power have vowed to plant 6,000 trees every time Arsenal fail to win.

A spokesman for the bookmakers said: “Since the Premier League has returned, an area the size of a football pitch is destroyed twice a week by Arsenal’s defence. We decided to step in and help hectare Bellerin out – after all, his team can’t defend their goal, let alone planet.”

Classy.

The ridicule…

Gosh… where to start.

If the defeats weren’t enough – antics off the field certainly were.

David Luiz, who made himself enemy number one when coming off the bench to devastating effect against Manchester City, was rewarded with a one-year contract extension.

Arsenal also gave 28-year-old Cedric Soares a lucrative four-year deal. Injury has prevented him from playing a single minute for the Gunners since arriving on loan in January.

So they both make sense. Good business sense.

The form…

Arsenal supporters waited exactly 100 days to see their side back in action after the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the campaign.

But let’s be honest – it’s been a complete disaster.

Their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City was followed by a 2-1 defeat to Brighton with striker Neal Maupay getting the last laugh in stoppage-time.

The Seagulls striker said a few of the Arsenal players required more humility shortly after being strangled by Matteo Guendouzi…

Arsenal have now lost 10 points from winning positions in their 12 Premier League games under Mikel Arteta – as many as they’d lost in their previous 36 combined under Fredrik Ljungberg and Unai Emery.

Team news – Southampton

Why change a winning formula? Southampton name the same starting XI who knocked Norwich for three at Carrow Road.

Team news – Arsenal

Mikel Arteta makes a full four changes from the side who were turned over by Brighton. The Spanish tactician has no option but to start Emiliano Martínez between the sticks after the injury to Bernd Leno.

Elsewhere there’s some good news in the shape of Granit Xhaka. The midfielder has recovered from an injury to replace Guendouzi, who is absent from the match day squad altogether. I’ll keep an eye out for any more information on the Frenchman’s absence.

Eddie Nketiah and Kieran Tierney also start in place of Alexandre Lacazette and Sead Kolasinac.

What’s coming up

Plenty. Obviously we start the evening with two fixtures in the 6pm slot. Arsenal’s trip to Southampton is being covered here and I’ll also provide updates on Burnley vs Watford.

Later this evening is the BIG ONE as Manchester City head to Stamford Bridge looking to prologue Liverpool’s title success. Remember, any dropped points against Chelsea means Jurgen Klopp’s side have done it.

Evening…

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Southampton vs Arsenal from a sweltering St Mary’s.

Thankfully I don’t have to travel down to the stadium because my car decided yesterday would be the ideal time for the air condition to break.

So if anyone knows of a cheap A/C Condenser for a 2016 Ford Focus – send them my way.

Sorry, that was highly unprofessional. Personal business aside… we’ve got plenty of football on the menu this evening.

Three Premier League fixtures to be played and the distinct possibility the title could be decided at Stamford Bridge.

We’ll get to that later because the team news for Arsenal’s clash with Southampton is imminent. Standby.
