UK weather latest: Heavy rain and wind to create ‘absolute horror show’ – new charts | Weather | News

Much of Britain basked in a glorious heatwave towards the end of last week with the hottest day of the year recorded on Thursday – as temperatures hit over 33C. But temperatures tumbled over the weekend and this week looks set to be unsettled, according to the latest forecast. And, heavy rain and powerful gusts could create an “absolute horror show”, one forecaster has claimed, ahead of this weekend, as some of the strict coronavirus lockdown measures are eased.

July 4 marks Britons being able to head back to pubs and restaurants, as long as social distancing can be maintained, but the weather may dampen the long-awaited day for some.

Writing on Twitter for The Weather Outlook, Brian Gaze, said: “GFS 12z has rolled out an absolute horror show for next weekend. Showers or longer spells of rain and windy.”

Looking at the week ahead, Mr Gaze added: “Wednesday brings showers to all regions. At times they could be heavy and prolonged. It remains quite cool for the time of year.

“During Thursday showers become more scattered. Temperatures remain disappointing for early July.

“Friday and the weekend are looking very unsettled. An unseasonably deep area of low pressure tracking just to the northwest of the UK has the potential to bring heavy rain and strong winds to all regions.”

Commenting on the conditions expected for Saturday, Mr Gaze, said: “It’s looking very unsettled as we head through the current week.

“There’s still uncertainty about the details for Saturday – on balance, it looks as though rain is likely in the north and western parts of the UK.

“Also a significant likelihood of rain in the south, but some computer models indicate the south could stay dry. At this stage, it’s not looking great.”

The Met Office outlook predicts an unsettled picture for the coming days.

“On Friday rain and strengthening winds moving eastwards across many northern and western areas.”

The Met Office also predicts next weekend will see “showers or longer spells of rain”, with the heaviest and most frequent in western areas.

Their outlook for Saturday 4 July to Monday 13 July, adds: “Temperatures will vary around average for the time of year though the west will be mainly rather cool.

“There will, however, still be some drier and sunny interludes.

“Changeable weather will probably continue in the second week of July although the rain may become more confined to the west and northwest with the best of any drier, brighter weather more likely across the south and east of the UK.

“Into the following weekend, there are signs that the weather may become drier, more settled and warmer again, particularly for southern and many central parts.”

With the changeable weather predicted, leading bookmakers have slashed odds on next month to go down as the wettest July on record.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “July could be a complete washout if the latest odds are anything to go by.”
