Alternative payment arrangements (APA) can be set up for claimants who cannot manage a single monthly payment, with there being a risk of financial harm to the claimant and/or their family.

APA can take different forms and for Universal Credit claimants who need additional support, the payments can be made directly to a landlord, come through more frequently than once month or be split between partners.

These alternatives can be considered at any point by a work coach or case manager and they can also be triggered by the claimant themselves.

APA will be considered on a case-by-case basis and just like normal Universal Credit payments, they will be based on the claimant’s specific circumstances.
